The engine has 470,000+ km’s on it. I’ve been driving the new body since 365,000 – over 100k has been put on it. It’s been to the Costa Rica – Panama border. It’s been through the midwestern USA. It’s managed many tough BC backroads, all over the province. It’s gone to the Baja. It’s been a daily driver in Vancouver – it barely has time to warm up on the way to work. So how has it fared?

  • A body mount on the front fender has broken
  • We’ve changed the fuel tank. The first one hung down too far.
  • It’s low on power. With both diff locks engaged and we’re in a tough spot the engine bogs down.
  • It doesn’t smoke to speak of. Really – it’s a clean old diesel.
  • All the lights work.
  • I’ve developed a leak in the rear passenger marker light. It lets water into the cab in heavy rainfall.
  • We’ve done no major repairs.
  • The clutch was replaced, but that’s routine.
  • There’s a crack in the rear frame near a rear spring hanger. This needs to be fixed!

Hey – it’s doing really well! I can’t wait for the old diesel to die – I’d love to replace it with more power. I think I’ll be waiting a long time.

R and R,

I’m glad to hear things are good. I missed the post about the turbo, and will search for that. I wondered what the ‘up island’ repairs were.
My plan to buy the HJ 60 fell through when I discovered some immediate problems I couldn’t deal with.
I’m going to look at an FJ 80 this weekend with a Cummins 5.9 in it. Yikes!

Hey just came across your site from a post on ih8mud.com. Where are you guys from… somewhere in BC? I’m from Vancouver Island, and currently adventuring around South America in the 3b powered 60 series cruiser we put together for the trip. Love the aluminum cruiser!

Safe travels,
