Zorritos, Northern Peru

We spent about 5 days camping on the north coast of Peru on a gorgeous sandy beach.  This is the last location where we will find relatively warm ocean on this trip.  Further south there is a different ocean current that prevails, yielding much colder water temperatures.

Northern PeruWe spent loads of time relaxing, taking Loca swimming in the ocean, and eating delicious fresh ceviche.  This country has already amazed us with the really really good ceviche (raw seafood marinated in lime juice).  It has been a welcome change over the constant chicken and rice over the last little while!

The owner of the place where we were camping, Leon, has 18 Peruvian hairless dogs.  They are very strange looking things … apparently they date back to Inca Peruvian dogtimes!  They largely act as a pack, and did not accept Loca into their midst!  Luckily for us, there was another guy staying at the place for a few days with a dog (also a Peruvian hairless dog) that was also shunned by the pack, so Loca and him became pals.

The highlight of our stay in Zorritos happened one sunny afternoon when … in it’s quest for a lizard lunch, a snake (and lizard) fell out of the thatched palapa above us … right onto my head.  I shrieked, swept it off my head, took a video of the ensueing event, and then promptly went back to drinking my tea under the very same palapa!  Not everyone can claim to have a snake fall on their head.  Frankly, I feel quite privileged!  I haven’t had time to publish the video, but hopefully sometime soon!

Did not like the story of the snake – I won’t watch that video! The hairless dog reminded me of U. Jamie skinning a cougar in our back garden – it was dead of course but when done it looked like those dogs!!
Loved the video of your clever puppy – you are so lucky – bit like your stray cats – I guess it’s you guys.
Miss you two. Looking forward to having you home.
Love,Auntie Helen
