Macchu Picchu

Since we were relatively close to this big tourist destination, we decided that we should probably check it out and see what all the fuss was about.  Not ones to do things the typical way, we discovered a backwards way to Macchu Picchu … and a more adventurous route too!  In lieu of hopping on an expensive train, or doing the expensive 4 day Inca trail hike (both of which would not allow us to take Loca with us), we headed into the backcountry.

RelaxingA 7 hour drive on a rugged road over a gorgeous mountain pass, and a 3 hour hike along some abandoned railway tracks, and we were at the small town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Macchu Picchu.  The following morning we hiked the last hour and a half up to the site, and spent the entire day wandering around and hiking the nearby mountain of Wayna Picchu.  The weather was amazing, and we even got a bit sunburnt!  We consider ourselves really lucky, as the following day, the rain rolled in and the entire site was covered in fog.  Luckily for us, we were on our outbound hike back to the truck, and only got slightly wet in the ensueing rainfall.Walking

We really enjoyed taking the road less travelled to Macchu Picchu … as well as taking Loca with us the whole way (except into the ruins), which we had been told was impossible.  We did a ton of hiking over a few days, including some considerable elevation gains, so we were quite exhausted by the time we reached the truck again!  We drove most of the 7 hours back to Cuzco that afternoon/evening before crashing at a lovely little hotel with lush gardens in a small town.  It was so peaceful there that we landed up staying for a relaxig 5 nights before moving on and heading towards Bolivia.

Check out our many photos of Macchu Picchu here.
