The travels of an all aluminum Land Cruiser and its owners…

BC to Mexico

Written by Robin on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

We left Victoria on a sunny Saturday afternoon (Jul 19th) after almost 3 weeks of Robin working 12hr + days on the truck getting it ready for the trip. I think it’s safe to say that the New Cruiser hasn’t been given this much attention since it was built!

We’re currently in Tuscon, Arizona, and will be crossing the border into Mexico within the next couple of hours. Our journey through the States has taken us to some beautiful locations that I have never been to before. If we had to pick one word to describe the trip so far … it would be HOT HOT HOT! Our route via Idaho, Utah and Arizona in mid July has put us into 100 degree F temperatures (that’s almost 38 degrees C) … and let me tell you … without an air conditioner in our vehicle, it is certainly a memorable experience!

Our stops along the way have included a night with Raenelle’s mom on San Juan Island; Rose & Pat (Robin’s sister & husband) in Seattle; camping at State Parks in Washington & Idaho; Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah; overnight at a Wal-Mart parking lot and also at a fancy resort in Arizona; and a few nights with some friends, Mirea & Josh, in Tuscon (Arizona). We’re planning on posting more about some of these experiences in the coming days or weeks.

We have slowly been unwinding and getting into holiday mode … although our time in the USA has been sprinkled with various stops along the way to deal with some ‘housekeeping’ things that will be difficult to do south of the border.

We have driven over several mountain passes already … and we are LOVING the new turbo that we fitted to the engine of the truck. It makes for such a more enjoyable ride … especially when the navigator doesn’t have to deal with a grumpy driver who is frustrated because he can’t pass other vehicles due to lack of engine power!

Okay, so why didn’t you put air conditioning in while you were at it? Victoria streets suffer from drivers who drive while too hot under the collar. Funny, they seem to target bicycles with their anger…I believe air conditioning is an essential safety feature, but then, that’s only me, I’m sure Newcruiser’s drivers never get like me…

Hmmm… I’m with your Dad on this, cousins! Yes, I know that Aircon is bad on petrol, bad on the environment and… ok maybe I’m with you. Maybe you should have applied a turbo to your in-cabin fans!
