We drove through southwestern New Mexico and camped overnight in the Gila National Forest. It rained all night, and when we packed up the tent in the morning, the mattress inside got a bit wet. The Technitop tent folds up, which is great for conserving rooftop space, but it also means that if the sides of the tent are wet when it is packed away, the sleeping gear inside also gets a little wet!The following day, we drove to the beautiful Grand Canyon. It’s an amazing place, and at this time of year there were relatively few tourists. It’s too bad that we don’t have our winter camping gear with us, as we would love to hike down into the canyon and spend a few days exploring down there. We’re thinking that will be another trip though! In the evening, we took the free shuttle into ‘town’ – we were on the prowl for an indoor payphone! We spent some time chatting to Noreen (Raenelle’s mom in Alaska) before making our way back to the campground. We barely slept at all that night as we were utterly frozen – despite the thermalwear, down duvet, two mexican blankets and a fleece blanket! The following morning, we took a walk along the rim of the canyon and then adjusted our travel plans. We are no longer going to travel north through Salt Lake City, but we will head west to Las Vegas and then north through eastern California.
