Esquipulas, Guatemala

We were unable to get an early start this morning as planned, and thus did not make it across to Honduras. We awoke this morning to discover that all of our gear that was strapped to the roof of the truck had been stolen in the night. That includes our 2 fold-up camping chairs, a small tent Noreen had purchased while travelling with us (that we use when it’s not convenient to use the rooftop tent), and also ….. most importantly, our sun/rain awning that attaches to the back of the truck so that we can cook and have shelter in bad weather. Luckily for us, the rooftop tent wasn’t taken (it’s bolted to the roofrack), and a spare can of diesel also managed to survive (although one of the bungy cords was cut, and it appears that the thieves weEsquipulas cathedralre disturbed).

So, we went into town (Coban) and organized for a new propane bottle (our little one fell off the back of the truck while driving yesterday) which took a few hours. We then headed towards Honduras and stopped off in another town to get some mosquito netting for the inside of the tent. Although we haven’t had many bugs in Guatemala at all, we’re not sure what the situation is further south. I am going to try and attach the netting to the inside of each window and door – the netting that comes with the tent is good quality, but is simply not designed to keep noseeums out.

We are staying overnight in a scummy hotel in Esquipulas, and went wandering round town earlier this evening. This town is famous for it’s large cathedral where thousands of people come annually as a pilgrimage. There are a number of motorcycles and cars roaming the streets, and it appears to be the ‘cool’ thing to do here – just drive round and round and round for hours. We’re guessing that we’re not going to get much sleep tonight, as there’s just too many tv’s, cars, trucks, motorcycles, music, and people making way too much noise.
