Getting Ready to Go

Have you ever asked yourself how to go travelling? Do you have friends that seem to just “pick up and go”, leaving the jobs, mortgages, family and friends back home? We ask this ourselves all the time, but we don’t stop there. We make it happen – it’s a priority for us – travelling to South America this year is going to be really exciting. Just ask Black cat.

Getting Ready to Go

Team Dynamics … - July 13, 2008
A good friend introduced me to the concept of Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing. I can’t do it justice in one sentence, but essentially, it describes the different stages that a team transitions through in order to become a functional, efficient team that is able to effectively tackle problems and deliver results.

Setbacks - June 15, 2008
They say that things don’t always go according to plan … and well, here we are! Nothing too serious … just another hurdle to jump in the relay of getting ready for a big trip.

Travel Guidebooks - May 24, 2008
It’s important to have some information on the countries that we’re travelling to, but it’s always hard to know where to find the best information. On our travels so far, we’ve found that the Lonely Planet guidebooks work quite well for us. They provide enough information, without overloading us with too many details. The downside […]

How Much Preparation is Enough? - March 24, 2008
We had the “I’m nervous about how much we have to do before we go” debate again last night. It’s t minus 3 months, 8 days and counting before we head south for South America. That’s a millennium to me. It’s right around the corner for Raenelle. Ok, she’s right, the work that I want […]

How Can We Afford this Expedition? - March 13, 2008
Many people wonder how we can afford to undertake long expeditions … and proceed to tell us how they could never afford to do it. This is simply not true. There is no perfect time to do something … if you wait for the perfect timing, you will wait forever. Sometimes you just have to […]

South America 2008 Truck Preparation - March 2, 2008
As Raenelle pointed out in yesterday’s post, my responsibilities for our South America 2008 expedition include preparing the truck and dealing with our technological concerns. I thought it might be useful to talk about what I’m doing to the truck and related equipment to get ready.

How We Plan for Expeditions - March 1, 2008
To our family, friends, and coworkers who have recently asked us whether we have our whole trip route planned yet, my answer is NO! and we will never have it fully planned out. We are planners to the point of necessity – too much planning ruins the excitement of a trip, while not enough can be dangerous.

Omens and Cats - August 18, 2007
When it rains, it pours. Cats, dogs, and kittens fall from the sky. Or so it seems. The First: Sometime in the distant past it rained, and yes even lightninged and thundered, just a bit. Sewers overflowed, cats were wet and grumpy, and general mayhem threatened its ugly head. Surely Riley, our good yet anxious […]

Lullaby - July 25, 2007
You know, I’ve got a lot of stories. Sometimes we’re sitting around talking with friends and they come up – you don’t realize how many there are until you start talking about them. There was the woman in Guerrero Negro who warmed the coals up on the stove with a hair dryer. Odd, but boring. […]

I’m ready to GO already… - July 22, 2007
It’s been nearly 4 years since our last substantial trip. We’ve gone on little diddy’s here and there, hey – we even made it Baja for 6 weeks over Christmas in 2005. Look. We graduated university April 2003. We were saddled with debt, unbelievable student loans. But now, 4 years later, no kids, no house, […]
