Yucatan

We will not soon forget our experiences in the Yucatan. What a great time we had there! We stayed with a Mayan family in the Chiapas highlands; explored the remote Yucatan; went to Chitchen Itza (Mayan ruins); and picked up Raenelle’s mom who travelled with us for a couple of weeks! Least favourite experience in the Yucatan: CANCUN!

Yucatan

Chetumal, Yucatan, Mexico - November 6, 2003
We spent most of the day travelling south towards the Belize border. We stopped at a great property overlooking a freshwater lagoon near Chetumal and camped for the night. The family had lots of dogs (more than seven) who nosed around our truck looking for scraps at dinnertime. In the morning, we swam in the […]

Chitchen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico - November 5, 2003
We spent a wonderful day walking around the ruins at Chitchen Itza. Among the many restored buildings on site was a large stadium-type structure called the ‘ballcourt’ where a complex game was played by the Mayans with a rubber ball and seven players on each team. The object was to keep the ball from hitting […]

Cancun, Yucatan, Mexico - November 4, 2003
We spent our first few hours in Cancun getting our laundry done, and un-fun stuff like that, but headed off to the beach in the afternoon. What a gorgeous beach! As much as we both disliked the glitz and glamour and Americanism of Cancun, we have to admit that the beaches really are superb. White […]

Northern Yucatan, Mexico - November 2, 2003
We camped overnight north of Merida on a beach near the area where it is believed that the huge meteor hit Mexico causing the extinction of the dinosaurs. Since we still had one day to kill before picking up Noreen in Cancun, we headed to another bird sanctuary for the night, but we didn’t see […]

Celestun, Yucatan, Mexico - November 1, 2003
Our drive to the western coast of the Yucatan Peninsula took us on some interesting back roads and through some very small rural villages. Most of the homes were round huts made from wooden sticks and mud. There were very few vehicles, and everyone used bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. Most of the […]

Seybaplaya, Yucatan, Mexico - October 30, 2003
We met a nice guy who owned an internet cafe in a small town, Escarcega. Since he was running the internet business out of his home, he let us use his shower, which was a relief after a few days of driving in stinking hot weather with no way to cool off! We continued north […]

El Aguacatal, Yucatan, Mexico - October 29, 2003
In the morning, we said goodbye and gave the kids a ride into San Cristobal to school. We went to an internet/phone place and organized with Noreen (Raenelle’s mom) for her to come down and meet us in Mexico. She is flying into Cancun and we will drive up there to meet her in a […]

San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico - October 28, 2003
Yesterday was our last day travelling along the Pacific coast of Mexico before heading inland for a while. Just before reaching the Chiapas border (for those of you unfamiliar with Southern Mexico, Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico that borders Guatamala) we were stopped for about an hour due to a ‘protest’. Actually, it […]
